This blog has been set up to give people a simple way to discuss infomation regarding Laura (Lori) Baron.
My first posting is a little letter I wrote a few days back for myself and decided to use as the first posting.
To begin with, I will let everyone view a short little video that aired a few years back on KING5 news. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8110500776576048099&hl=en
On Thursday, November 2nd 2006, Lori Baron was rushed to the emergency room at Tacoma General Hospital. At the time, the doctors thought Lori had a clogged bowel from a surgery that was performed a number of years ago.
Once in the emergency room, the staff ran some tests and gave Lori some medication for the pain. Once the results came back, they scheduled the surgery for the following day. Both Lori and her husband Chris were relieved knowing that the results had come back and that a plan had been formulated by the surgery staff on how to tend to Lori’s problem.
The following day seemed to drag on because Lori’s surgery had been scheduled for late in the afternoon due to the surgery center already being used for other patients. Before the surgery, Chris and Lori prayed for a positive outcome and Lori was rolled of into the Surgery Center.
The surgery itself seemed to take forever for Chris. Which would be the case for anyone having the anxiety, and anticipation of a loved one going under the knife. Once out of surgery, Lori was rolled into the recovery room where everything appeared to be going well. After a couple of hours in recovery, the staff determined that Lori was well enough to continue her stay in one of the many patient rooms at Tacoma General.
My wife, Julie and I arrived at the hospital to check up on Lori in the late afternoon. We were both had happy anticipation at the time due to knowledge that we were both off on a week long vacation the following morning.
Lori’s room was up on the 6th floor. Julie was familiar with this hospital because she had worked for the previous year at the building next door and frequently visited the hospital for work. Both Julie and I went to the reception desk on the 6th floor to verify the room that Lori was in. The staff in the reception area verified her room and we both proceeded down the hall to Lori’s room.
Once in the room the happy anticipation that we had previously been feeling quickly changed. The doctors had just been in to explain how the surgery went. The doctors then proceeded to explain that the bowel had in fact been obstructed but it was not caused by scar tissue as previously thought. The real reason was due to Ovarian Cancer that had been so aggressive that it covered most organs within Lori’s abdomen.
The news of the cancer was devastating to everyone in the room and the thing that kept going thru my mind was, “What about the kids, What about the kids”? The kids that I am speaking of are the combined effort of Lori and Chris to help as many less fortunate kids as possible.
Over the past few years, Lori and Chris have adopted a total of eleven children from all over the world. Some are from Africa, some are from Russia, some are from South America. Some have physical limitations, and some have other special needs. The one thing they all have in common is the unequivocal love and devotion of Lori and Chris. They are the glue that binds this family together and gives them all hope and direction.
Since the original diagnoses, Lori along with Chris have met with the doctors to determine a new plan. Unfortunately, neither Lori nor Chris have medical insurance because Chris has been working out of the house for the past couple of years starting up an electronics mail order business. The business has been progressing in the right direction, but with any start up business and eleven adopted kids, and two others in college, times are tight and cancer could not have picked a worse time to rear its ugly head.
Lori’s extended family has banded together to form a fund raising committee and has a fund raising auction and dinner scheduled for December 15th 2006. They have also contacted King 5 television in Seattle to see about doing a follow up to human interest story that highlighted the sincerity and caring of Lori and Chris and their adoption efforts over the past few years. King 5 has scheduled an interview with Lori and her family for Sunday, November 19th at 3:00 pm.
